چکیده

BACKGROUND Children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) display numerous neuropsychological impairments, including deficits on measures of executive functioning (EF) and working memory. OBJECTIVES The goal of this project was to examine whether children with PAE and FASD demonstrate EF and working memory deficits on the CANTAB® (a computerized neuropsychological test). METHODS Twenty-four children with PAE and 26 control children were tested on the CANTAB®. RESULTS Children with PAE demonstrated deficits in the areas of executive functioning, working memory, and attention. Among the PAE group, those with FASD were specifically impaired on working memory capacity. CONCLUSIONS The CANTAB® is a useful tool for detecting neurobehavioral deficits in children with PAE.

Executive function deficits in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) measured using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Tests Automated Battery (CANTAB).

BACKGROUND Chronic prenatal alcohol exposure causes a spectrum of deleterious effects in offspring, collectively termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), and deficits in executive function are prevalent in FASD. The goal of this research was to test the hypothesis that children with FASD exhibit performance deficits in tasks that assess attention, planning and spatial working memory. M...

Neuropsychological functioning in children with Tourette syndrome (TS).

OBJECTIVE We examined whether children with Tourette syndrome (TS) displayed a unique pattern of neuropsychological deficits on the CANTAB relative to control children. We also looked at whether children with TS and other comorbidities had more neuropsychological impairments than those with uncomplicated TS and how age was related to the profile of neuropsychological deficits in TS. METHOD Pa...

Verbal Learning and Memory in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Findings from Cape Town and Detroit

Prenatal alcohol exposure is associated with a range of negative cognitive outcomes in children, including, frequently, impaired verbal learning and memory. The aim if the current research was to replicate previous findings on the effects of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure on verbal learning and memory, as well as elaborate on previous research including children with moderate prenatal alcohol ...

Higher functioning children with prenatal alcohol exposure: is there a specific neurocognitive profile?

Recent attempts to identify a neurocognitive profile of children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have led to an emerging "generalized deficit" conceptualization marked by diffuse information processing and integration difficulties as opposed to a specific profile. This study examines whether this conceptualization can be extended to higher functioning children with PAE who are without inte...
